When the Ford Escape becomes a plug-in hybrid
The Ford Escape is Ford's most successful compact SUV. Its unique style and exceptional capabilities make it particularly attractive. But when, like this year, it's also available in an eco- friendly version, the Ford Escape PHEV (or plug-in hybrid) becomes the best companion for families.
Over the years, the Ford Escape has evolved. The first generation focused more on all-around efficiency. Subsequent generations have continued on that path, refining comfort and efficiency.
Today, the Ford Escape has become an adventure companion, sure, but it's also the city vehicle that can get you to your destination with gusto. The more modern, rounded silhouette sets it apart from its rivals, while its well-stocked interior provides interesting living space.
It's in the technology department that it evolves the most, however, still offering a traditional gasoline variant, and a hybrid version. This year, however, the PHEV adds an electric component that's more present than ever, offering a 100 percent electric range of some 60 kilometres, and one of the lowest fuel consumption ratings on the market.
Find out about this model
To achieve its 60-kilometre electric range, the little Escape relies on a 14.4 kWh lithium-ion battery. The battery is paired with an electric motor and a 2.5-litre inline four-cylinder gasoline engine. A continuously variable transmission sends power to the front wheels.
Together, these engines are enough to produce some 221 horsepower and propel the vehicle to 100 kilometres per hour in just over 8 seconds. To get the full electric range, the Escape PHEV will need to recharge for about 3.5 hours at a 240-volt home station.
Overall, this type of powertrain can be expected to deliver a fuel economy rating of 5.8 L/100 km in combined mode.
The Ford Escape PHEV is more than just a new hybrid system. It's also a compact SUV that's packed with technology and systems designed to enhance occupant comfort.
For example, the panoramic sunroof and large digital display unit behind the steering wheel give the Ford Escape an adventurous, forward-looking feel. The Sync infotainment system, available with a screen housed in the center of the dashboard, allows for full integration of Android Auto and Apple Car Play and offers one of the most advanced voice recognition systems available.
Best of all, the Ford Escape PHEV is incredibly safe with Ford Co-Pilot360 technology that offers rear-end traffic alerts, forward collision avoidance, high-intensity automatic headlights, and more. The optional CoPilot package also adds intelligent cruise control, as well as traffic sign recognition.
A hands-free power liftgate and memory settings for the driver's seat and outside mirrors are now part of the Technology Package. A 10-way power driver's seat, keyless entry and LED exterior lighting are now part of the Convenience Package feature list.
